What is happening in Darfur?

 

 

Darfur is a region in western Sudan.  The area of Darfur is divided into three sections, West Darfur, North Darfur, and South Darfur.  Darfur used to stand independently, but was incorporated into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces.  Darfur has been the site of a bloody civil war in the early 21st century.  It has been considered a humanitarian emergency since 2003 due to the amount of murder and displaced individuals.

 

The civil conflict in Darfur dates back to February 2003.  Drought, desertification, and mass overpopulation have led to land disputes and nomads and other peoples have to go in search of water. 

The Sudanese military and hte Janjaweed, a Sudanese militia made up of Afro-Arab tribemens, aer responsible for invading he Darfur region and decimating villages all across the Darfur region.

Many countries call if genocide, and many more consider it a humanitarian crisis.  Estimates are hard to make due to the suppression of information by the Sudanese government, but it has been said that as many as 300,000 people have died during the conflict, and more than 5 million people have been displaced.

In 2008, the international courts filed charges against Omar al-Bashir for both genocide and crimes against humanity over the conflict.  So far, al-Bashir has denyed all charges.
